Synopsis

In the Texas of 1860, U. S. Marshal Gideon McCool is given the task of transporting four prisoners in a prison wagon across the Texas badlands to the Huntsville state penitentiary. The quartet consists of Hank Pleasant, a child-killer sentenced to hang; R. C. Crawford, an embezzling railroad commissioner; Angel Dominguez, a Mexican goat thief eager to learn a trade in prison; and Laura Manon, a dancehall entertainer who shot her unfaithful lover. With hot-tempered Mike Reno riding as his newly appointed deputy, McCool sets out on the 4-day trek, unaware that Pleasant's brother Aaron and his cousin Ned are trailing close behind waiting for the right moment to attack. While the group is camped for the night, Laura, who has kept her past romance with McCool a secret, attempts to entice Mike and pleads with him to help her escape. Their conversation is overheard by McCool, who now has no choice but to shackle Mike in the wagon with the prisoners. Then Pleasant's two relatives, plus four more of his kinfolk, attack. Realizing that McCool hasn't a chance alone, Laura confesses to Mike that she made love to him only in the hope of gaining her freedom and that she really loves McCool. Upon hearing the truth, Mike persuades McCool to release him; and together the two men shoot down their six opponents and then continue safely on the last lap of their journey.
