Synopsis

Lionel Aldridge, 33-year-old director of a Madison Avenue advertising agency, is dissatisfied with his domestic life. Leaving his wife, Jane, and 8-year-old daughter, Sara, he rents a bachelor apartment. At a party given by his old friend Martha and her husband, Lincoln, he meets Laurie, a dancer. Although they sleep together, Aldridge remains unsatisfied. Retaining his own apartment, the executive then moves in with television producer Rosalind Leopold. Aldridge's next affair is with Amelia, his old college girl friend, now a wealthy Boston matron. Although Amelia and Aldridge enjoy a 4-day idyll, the matron refuses to divorce her husband. Disgusted by Aldridge's promiscuity, Jane files for divorce. When Aldridge attempts to seek solace with Laurie, the dancer has a nervous breakdown and is committed to a sanitarium. Aldridge then plans a weekend rendezvous with Amelia, who fails to join him because of servant problems. Initially depressed, Aldridge's spirits rise when he realizes that he can start life anew.
