Synopsis

When Caroline Desborough discovers that her husband Dick is having an affair with Daisy Rittenshaw, she appeals to Daisy's husband Jim to intervene. Jim overhears Dick and Daisy plotting to elope, and in a rage, he kills Dick. However, Dick's spirit remains earthbound, trapped by his allegiance to an earlier credo of no God, no sin and no future life. At his funeral, Dick's apparition appeals to Daisy, who urges him to redeem himself for his sins. After Dick allays the suffering that he caused by bringing Daisy and Jim back together, and after earning the forgiveness of his wife, Dick's spirit is allowed to rest in peace.

Notes

One year in production, this film was "fourwalled": Goldwyn leased two legitimate theaters, one each in New York and Chicago, to premiere the film. Some scenes were shot in Montecito, CA. Some sources list Standing's character as "Nicholas Desborough." The film was remade by Twentieth Century-Fox in 1940, with Warner Baxter starring and Irving Pichel directing.
