Synopsis
The murder of two Sicilians, Arturo Manno and Dr. Antonio Roscio, is assumed by the local townspeople and police to be a crime of honor against Manno because of his illicit love affair with Rosina, a peasant girl. However, Prof. Paolo Laurana, an idealistic intellectual, remains unconvinced that the murders were committed by Rosina's father and two brothers, and he begins his own investigation. After diligent inquiry, with virtually no help from the close-mouthed villagers, Paolo becomes certain that the real motive behind the killings was to silence Dr. Roscio's criticism of Mafia power and that Manno was slain only as a coverup. Aided by Roscio's widow, Luisa, the professor uncovers a diary left by Roscio in which he indicates his plan to denounce an unnamed political figure whom Paolo suspects is Luisa's cousin Rosello. After receiving anonymous letters threatening his life, Paolo is drawn into an ambush by Rosello, but he is allowed to escape when he reveals that he has Roscio's incriminating diary. Luisa, whom Paolo now loves, lures him to a deserted beach where he learns that she is Rosello's mistress. He is brutally attacked by hired killers and buried alive in a sandstone quarry. The professor's death permits Luisa and Rosello to marry and the town to keep its secret about the true motives behind the three murders.
