Synopsis

On the advice of wealthy social reformer Jefferson Baxter, a police vice squad raids a burlesque show featuring singer/dancer Dixie Barlow. Small-time attorney Gil Gailord defends Dixie in court, and although Dixie is an orphan, Gil pleads that she supports her elderly mother. After the judge places Dixie on probation and releases her to her "mother's" custody, Gil gives her the keys to a penthouse apartment owned by bookie Tim Raynor, who has also been run out of town by Baxter. Gil then goes to a retirement home and hires the cleaning woman, Mattie, to impersonate Dixie's mother. Gil returns with Mattie just as Baxter and Sergeant O'Brien arrive at the apartment to make sure that Dixie is meeting her parole qualifications. When Tim and his formerly estranged wife Irene return to the penthouse because Tim's assistant, Maxwell, bought the wrong train tickets for his escape, Gil pretends that Tim is Dixie's uncle. Tim then convinces Dixie that she should marry Baxter's son Jeff to resolve her financial difficulties, and arranges for her to perform at Harry Farmer's Blue Lagoon Club. Jeff visits the club at Harry's invitation, and he is easily seduced by the burlesque queen, who is now billed as "The Sarong Girl." However, Gil, who has fallen in love with Dixie, now believes that she is a chiseler and rejects her. Kindly Mattie, meanwhile, confides in Gil that she is comfortable with her deception because her prayers for a family have been answered. After a whirlwind romance, Jeff proposes to Dixie. Baxter, however, tries to bribe her to leave Jeff, but to Gil's dismay, Dixie refuses his offer. Although Dixie tries to make up with Gil, he bitterly encourages her to go through with her plan. When Mattie sees that Dixie truly loves Gil, she tells Baxter the truth about herself. Baxter informs the police, and Sergeant O'Brien disrupts the hasty penthouse wedding with the news that Dixie will now have to serve her sentence in jail. Realizing that her heart belongs to someone else, Jeff releases Dixie from their engagement, and reunites with his former girl friend Barbara. Dixie reappears before a judge, who rescinds her probation, but Gil interrupts the proceedings with paperwork proving that Mattie has filed to officially adopt Dixie. The case is then dismissed, but when Gil is found liable for fraud, the judge suggests that a wife cannot testify against her husband, and takes Gil and Dixie into his chambers to be married.
