Synopsis

As summer comes to an end on Long Island, Paul and his friends Steve and Barbara are discussing their forthcoming year of high school. Russ, a football hero and the school bully, arrives with his beautiful girl friend, Christine. When Christine shows an interest in Paul, an introverted intellectual, he secretly makes a date with her, and they go to New York City to see a performance of Romeo and Juliet. Feigning sickness, however, Christine is brought home early, and Paul later discovers that she also had a date with Russ that night. His pride hurt, Paul turns to Barbara, who is eager to go out with him. When Paul is injured by Russ during football practice, Christine, tired of Russ's rough ways, decides to see Paul again, but he is confronted by the jealous Russ, who burns Paul's varsity jacket. The next day, Paul humiliates Russ in the locker room when he frightens him with a cigarette lighter shaped like a gun. Although pleased with his revenge, and certain that Barbara still loves him, Paul is still unsure of himself as he watches Russ and Christine frolic on the beach.
