Synopsis

In compliance with a court order 60 white students are bused to Lafayette High School, administered by black vice-principal Quincy Davis, a former basketball star. The white presence is resented by militant blacks led by J. T. Watson, and white resentment crystallizes in the person of Leaky Couloris, a racist. While Davis interests black Lerone Johnson in reading by giving the student pornographic paperbacks, he is discouraged by the brutal beating of white athlete Douglas Falk during basketball tryouts. When Couloris and Johnson fight, both are expelled, triggering a strike by the entire student body. Informed that both offenders will be treated fairly, student leader Watson quashes the potential riot. Following this confrontation Davis persuades black teacher Lorraine Nash and white victim Falk to remain at Lafayette.
