Synopsis

The idyllic life of the French village of Angevine is disrupted when inhabitant Marie Panneton, daughter of the town's strait-laced mayor--cafe owner--movie theater operator, wins the "Queen of the Sea" beauty contest, thereby attracting American Broderick MacPower. Recently deserted by his fifth wife, the millionaire has decided to marry the winner. Although Marie is in love with cellist schoolmaster Gabriel, she temporarily succumbs to the blandishments of MacPower, who to charm her moves the entire village to Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor, where it immediately becomes a tourist attraction. Nevertheless, MacPower returns the lovesick Marie to Gabriel and the homesick Angevinians to France, and plans a chain of simulated French towns.
