Synopsis

In 476 B. C., Rome is besieged by the Etruscans, who are aided by Greek soldiers and Gallic horsemen led by Drusco. The Etruscan chief, Porsenna, grants a truce on condition that Rome provide 1000 hostages as security. Drusco, captivated by Clelia, leader of a valiant squadron of Roman women, demands that the women be included among the hostages. Meanwhile, Lucilla, an Etruscan noblewoman, agitates among the Greeks for the destruction of Rome. She arranges to have Drusco's men relieved of the duty of guarding the women, and, when they have left the camp on a mission, she plies the Etruscans with drink in the hope that they will assault the hostages. Clelia and her army escape to Rome, but the truce is now shattered. The Etruscans attack Rome, but Clelia's warriors travel underground through the sewers to attack the enemy from the rear. The Etruscans gain the advantage, but Drusco intervenes, makes peace with Rome, and proposes marriage to Clelia.
