Synopsis
When Kitty O'Day, the nosy switchboard operator at the Townley Hotel, hears gunshots while taking an in-house call from Mr. Williams, the hotel's owner, she sends her boyfriend, travel agent Johnny Jones, to investigate. Johnny and Jeff, the night porter, go to Williams' apartment in the hotel and discover his slain body. Although Kitty, an avid amateur detective, wants to conduct her own investigation, Johnny insists on notifying the police and leaves Jeff to guard Williams' body. Having dealt with Kitty on a previous murder case, chief detective Clancy is skeptical of Kitty's claims and is annoyed when he and his assistant, Mac, find Jeff unconscious on the floor, but no body. After the disgruntled detectives leave, Kitty goes to her apartment in the hotel and is shocked to discover Williams' corpse on the couch. By the time Clancy and Mac return, however, the body has once again disappeared. Clancy does find Williams' wallet on the couch and arrests Kitty and Johnny for murder. Later, at the police station, Clancy questions several other employees of the hotel, including Williams' wife Gloria, masseur Nick Joel, whom Kitty suspects is having an affair with Gloria, Nick's assistant and girl friend, Carla Brant, head clerk Roberts and manager Sauter. Also present is a guest who calls himself Walter Harris, but privately identifies himself to Clancy as Michael Tracy, a detective for a jewelers' association who has been sent to the hotel because of some recent jewel thefts. After Gloria insists that her husband is in Chicago and lost his wallet months before, Clancy decides to release Kitty and Johnny. Now suspicious of Nick and Gloria, the ever-determined Kitty cajoles Johnny into searching Nick's quarters in the hotel's basement. Johnny enters Nick's parlor claiming to want a massage and tries to sneak into his office, but ends up in the women's section instead. Johnny is discovered and arrested for lewd behavior, but Kitty convinces Clancy of Johnny's innocence and secures his release. Afterward, Kitty decides that Roberts must be involved in the murder, and she and a reluctant Johnny sneak into Roberts' apartment. There, they find Tracy's body and are surprised by the arrival of a gun-wielding Roberts. While holding the couple at gunpoint, Roberts summons Clancy, who promptly arrests Kitty and Johnny for murder. When a coroner's report establishes the time of Tracy's death, however, Clancy is forced to release the couple because they were with him at the time of murder. A now exhausted Johnny and Kitty return to the hotel and are terrified to discover Roberts' electrocuted body in the service elevator. Afraid that the lever through which Roberts was electrocuted is still charged, Kitty and Johnny refuse to open the door and scream for help. Clancy and Mac happen to hear them, and when they finally get the elevator door open, they see Roberts' body and go after the fleeing Johnny and Kitty. After a prolonged chase, Kitty and Johnny end up in the hotel laundry area and there discover Williams' corpse. With Clancy and Mac still pursuing her, Kitty then sneaks into Williams' darkened apartment and sees a man slip in and remove some jewels from a drawer. Kitty turns on the lights and reveals the thief to be Sauter. Before Sauter can escape, Johnny rushes in and knocks him out, and Kitty and Johnny proudly turn Sauter over to Clancy and Mac. Later, at the police station, Clancy, Kitty and Johnny explain to Gloria, Nick and Carla how Sauter and Williams conspired to commit the jewel robberies and when Williams "got greedy," Sauter sent for Tracy to trap Williams. After Sauter killed Williams, Roberts began blackmailing him, so Sauter murdered Tracy in Roberts' apartment, hoping he would be implicated. When that plan failed, Sauter killed Roberts. With the murders solved, Kitty and Johnny return to their old jobs, much to the relief of Clancy and Mac.

Notes
The working title of this film was Kitty O'Day Comes Through. Adventures of Kitty O'Day was a sequel to the 1944 Monogram picture Detective Kitty O'Day . Although Hollywood Reporter news items announced that Adventures of Kitty O'Day was to be the second entry in a proposed Monogram series, only two "Kitty O'Day" films were produced. A modern source incorrectly lists Fashion Model, another 1945 Monogram picture , as a "Kitty O'Day" film. A Hollywood Reporter news item adds Virginia Wicks to the cast, but her appearance in the final film has not been confirmed.
