Synopsis

After she is fired for having too great an interest in the outlaw past of Coasterville, schoolteacher Jane Carpenter and her boyfriend, reporter Hank Dawson, plan to leave their small town when news comes over the wire that gangster Frank Kingman has escaped from jail and is heading their way. Shortly after the news, federal agents and big city reporters descend on the town. As Hank is occupied with the other reporters, Jane goes off by herself to pack her things at school, and there she finds Kingman hiding. Reminding her of the tradition of the Dalton and the James gangs, Kingman asks Jane to help hide him from the police. She finally agrees and drives him to a hidden shack in the mountains. Jane's behavior makes Hank suspicious, and Jane confesses she has hidden Kingman. While he rushes to tell federal agent Purdue, Jane heads off to warn Kingman. When the posse arrives at the shack, Kingman is not there and Hank looks like a fool. Meanwhile, Kingman's men lure the police away from the area. Hank and townsman Ed Hoggins overhear Kingman tell Jane that he plans to rob the town's bank. Hoggins gets excited and calls the sheriff, but once again Kingman is gone when the police arrive. After the two wild goose chases, nobody believes Hank when he tells them that Kingman is planning to rob the local bank. In order to thwart the robbery, Jane and Hank start a run on the bank so when the thieves arrive the bank has no money. Kingman is finally captured and Hank scoops the rival reporters. He is offered jobs on big city newspapers, but decides to marry Jane and stay home, having earned a new promotion to editor.
