Synopsis
During World War I, an Italian soldier, Tarasconi, is separated from his retreating regiment near the Italian-Austrian border. He accidentally captures a one-armed Austrian general and resolves to bring him to the Italian high command in exchange for a large reward and a medal. The general escapes from his bumbling captor but falls into the hands of a peasant girl, Ada, who agrees to share the general with Tarasconi for an even split of the reward. She later tricks the soldier, however, by taking his rifle and locking him in a railroad car. Although Ada and the general form a grudging respect for each other, their relationship is greatly strained by days of starvation and the general's breaking his leg. They finally find a deserted farm where they can rest, and there they are fortuitously reunited with Tarasconi, who has escaped from the train. As the trek continues, the ragged trio eventually acquire a donkey, and they even get some food from Austrian soldiers when Ada offers to show them her body. Emotionally united by their misfortunes, the threesome ultimately reach a minefield, where first the donkey, then Ada and Tarasconi, are killed by explosions. The general, sick of war and grief-stricken by the deaths of his companions, surrenders to Italian forces, vowing to make sure that credit for his arrest goes to his two ill-fated captors.
