Synopsis

Seamstress Mary Williams, the widowed mother of four children, spends her life in devotion to them although heartache is her chief reward. Jenny is a hard-working image of her mother, and Artie becomes a promising architect; but Danny falls in with gangsters and trouble with the police, and Beatty, a "romantic dreamer" and member of the intelligentsia, has an affair with wealthy and married Gerald Hart. Following his release from prison, Danny plans to blackmail Artie, who has changed his name, but he finds a readier opportunity in Hart's love letters to Beatty. Unfortunately, the confrontation between Beatty and Danny results in Beatty's death and, ultimately, Danny's execution in the electric chair. Artie leaves home in order to sever all connection with the incident, but Mary finds solace in his success.
