Synopsis

In 1897 Mildred Huckins is a beautiful young girl in love with Lyman Webb. Her austere and inexorable mother is opposed to the match and would marry her to an adipose millionaire. Lyman then joins the Rough Riders and goes off to fight in the Spanish-American War. Mildred's mother intercepts his letters, and Lyman's affection for Mildred cools. So tyrannical and dictatorial is Mildred's mother that Mildred's brother, Gene, goes to the bad and gets in trouble with a woman. Mildred's father, in an attempt to avert disgrace, then steals money from the bank in which he works. Gene extricates himself from his difficulties, but his father commits suicide. Lyman is killed in action, and Mildred finally marries Arthur; but their life together is a drab one. Years later, Mildred's daughter, Dorothy, falls in love with a promising young man and asks her mother's consent to marry. Mildred at first refuses her permission, but when she reflects on her own shattered romance, she relents and gives the children her blessing.
