Synopsis
In 1851, dentist Philip "Painless" Pennington and his assistant, Roy Banks, are on their way to settle in Little Town, unaware that the entire town is about to leave on a gold rush wagon train. After extracting an outlaw's tooth at gunpoint, Roy and Pennington, who use generous amounts of chloroform on their patients, arrive in Little Town and immediately are accosted by founding father John Little. Impressed by the bustle of the town, Pennington and Roy are easily duped into buying one of Little's buildings for their new practice and join Little in repeated toasts. The next day, however, the hungover duo is shocked to discover that the town has been deserted. As they bemoan their bad fortune, a wagon carrying a dead scout pulls into town. In the scout's hand, the duo finds a note that states that the Little Town wagon train is being led into an Indian ambush. Roy, anxious to protect Mary Blake, the Little Town schoolteacher with whom he is infatuated, insists that they find the wagon train before the attack. The duo soon catches up to the train, but Hank Bewley and Trigger, the crooked leaders of the wagon train, publicly dismiss their warnings. Roy and Pennington, however, overhear Trigger confessing to the scout's death and also learn of Hank's plans to change the train's course to throw off suspicion. Before they can expose the leaders, Pennington and Roy are accused by Hank of being renegades. As they are about to be lynched by the group, Roy and Pennington sink into a bed of quicksand and elude their executioners. The next morning, Chief Cyclone and his men find the dentists and take them to their camp. After threatening to kill the duo, Chief Cyclone dresses them in Indian garb and insists that they participate in a tribal "race for life." Still dressed as Indians, Roy and Pennington escape from the chief and rush back to the wagon train. Once again, the group refuses to believe the duo's warnings until Chief Cyclone and his tribe encircle the train with blasting rifles. Inspired by the slingshot of Morton, a young prospector, Roy and Pennington begin shooting dental sponges dipped in chloroform at the attacking Indians. As the Indians fall victim to the chloroform bombs, Roy volunteers to ride for the cavalry, which finally routs the Indians. After Roy and Pennington are declared heroes, they discover that rocks from Little Town that Morton had been carrying are filled with gold. The soon-to-be-rich Roy, Pennington and Mary embrace.
