Synopsis

At an air show attended by top NATO observers, a group of parachutists demonstrating a new parachute designed by Jim Radford disappear into a red cloud and never reach the ground. General Armstrong and Wing Commander Baldwin hire Bob Megan, a former U. S. Air Force investigator, to look into the strange occurrence. Bob discusses the matter with Dr. Matthews, the head of the local space research laboratory, and his assistant Julie Slade. When one of the missing parachutists is found and discovered to have been chemically altered from human form, Bob decides to make a jump himself. He vanishes into the red cloud but reappears in a state of unconsciousness. When he revives, Bob discovers that Lorna, a mysterious woman to whom he has been attracted, is an alien being and that Jim Radford was killed while following her. Bob also learns that Dr. Matthews' body has been taken over by one of the aliens on a mission to repopulate his planet with humans. The alien attempts to kill Bob, but Lorna kills him in order to save Bob. Lorna agrees to return the remaining parachutists, who have been kept in a state of suspended animation, and in return Bob agrees to help Lorna's people by finding volunteers to live on her planet.
