Born Benjamin Solomon Carson in Detroit, Michigan, Ben Carson was a neurosurgeon who was the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland from 1984 until 2013. He was a specialist, who, among many other achievements in the field, successfully separated conjoined twins and developed a surgical technique for controlling seizures. Carson was a conservative who credited his devotion to scripture, specifically the Book of Proverbs, with helping him to control his anger and steer his life in a positive direction, although after these claims were made, friends and acquaintances from the past accused Carson of exaggerating his bad temper. In 2009 Carson was the subject of a television drama starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. called "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story." In 2013 Carson gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in which he criticized President Barack Obama's progressive taxation policy and his hotly contested healthcare overhaul. In 2015 Carson announced that he would run to be the Republican nominee for President of the United States. Carson's politics were rigidly conservative and he described himself as pro-life, strongly supported the Second Amendment, and rejected scientific claims about the causes and the prognosis of climate change. In March 2016, Carson withdrew from the race, and threw his endorsement behind Donald Trump.
