Leftist art critic who authored an influential study of aesthetics, "Ways of Seeing" (1973), and scripted three of the films that brought Swiss director Alain Tanner to international prominence--"La salamandre" (1971), "The Middle of the World" (1974) and "Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000" (1976). Son Jacob Berger is an actor.
