Biography
Key figure in the new generation of serious Indian filmmakers. Well established in his own country for his stinging, often controversial social critiques, Benegal has yet to find major international acclaim. He began his career in advertising, making over 250 commercials before directing his first feature, "Ankur/The Seedling," in 1974. In 1988 Benegal produced "Powaqqatsi," Godfrey Reggio's visual poem on Third World exploitation.
