Biography
Before Mairzee Almas earned top billing as a director on the Clark Kent-centric teen drama "Smallville," she spent the majority of her early career working as a second unit or assistant director. Her first job--as second assistant director--was certainly not a major one (the straight-to-video 1996 action-drama "Bounty Hunters"), and throughout most of the '90s and early '00s, she tended to find work on shows and films that were slightly obscure. One exception was the 2000 casino heist drama "Reindeer Games," on which she served as first assistant director. While the film itself wasn't particularly well-received either critically or commercially, working with big name stars like Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron certainly wasn't a blemish on Almas' resume. For a five-year span, Almas worked on the Canadian coroner crime-mystery series "Da Vinci's Inquest," serving as first assistant director on a total of 31 episodes. While the show won numerous awards in Canada, it remained something of a hidden gem--which is certainly not the case with "Smallville," Almas' next project. She joined the crew in 2003 (the same year she ended her tenure on "Inquest"), serving as first assistant director on a whopping 62 episodes. With all that experience under her belt, she went on to direct nine episodes herself. In 2011, though, she found herself back with her old position, joining up with the fantasy-drama "The Secret Circle."
