Biography
An Australian-born press baron, tabloid journalist and media mogul, Murdoch built the News Corporation into a global media powerhouse from virtually nothing. At one time he owned Australia's three commercial TV networks and in the mid-1980s launched a six-channel satellite TV venture in the United Kingdom. Holdings in America were soon forthcoming, and by 1985 the Murdoch conglomerate included the New York Post, Boston Herald and the London Times, in addition to gas and oil companies, airlines, publishing houses and TV stations. In 1985 he completed his acquisition of Hollywood major 20th Century Fox and the following year purchased six TV stations from Metromedia that became the nucleus for the Fox Broadcasting Company. Since 1986, Murdoch has added five more stations to his stable. In February 1992, he assumed full responsibility for the day-to-day operations of Fox Inc., 20th Century Fox and the Fox Broadcasting Company when chairman Barry Diller resigned. He has also headed up the cable giants Sky TV and STAR TV which broadcast programs across Europe, Latin America and Asia.
