Biography

Doe-eyed blonde actress, most vividly remembered for her soulful performances as Fanny, the pregnant, abandoned fish-seller in playwright-director Marcel Pagnol's Marseilles trilogy, "Marius" (1931), "Fanny" (1932) and "Cesar" (1936). (Demazis had earlier created the character on the Paris stage.)

Pagnol's companion from 1929 for almost ten years, Demazis also starred as the title character under the playwright's direction in "Angele" (1934), the sentimental, poignant story of another abandoned, expectant mother. She appeared opposite the popular horse-faced French comedian Fernandel in Pagnol's "Regain" (1937) and "Le Schpountz"/"Heartbeat" (1938). After Demazis' relationship with Pagnol ended, her career went into decline, although she appeared sporadically in minor roles into the late 1970s.
