Biography
Flexibility has been a hallmark of actor Art Cohan's career, whose greatest acclaim has come from his work as a teacher. Cohan began studying with legendary acting coach Milton Katselas in 1987 at a New York City workshop before moving to Los Angeles in 1992. There, he continued taking lessons with Katselas at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, receiving his first role a year later in a small guest part on the mystery series "Murder, She Wrote." On film, his highest-profile role was in the 1999 Mel Gibson action vehicle "Payback," in which Cohan portrayed a thug working for Kris Kristofferson's kingpin villain, Bronson. While Cohan's career since has largely been limited to short films and unreleased independent films, his continuing studies with Katselas paid off with a second job, as he made the move from student to administrator and teacher. Despite Hollywood's respect for Katselas's work, his long-standing connection with the Church of Scientology generated controversy due to the number of thespians he'd trained that joined the religion. Though Katselas fell out with the church before his death in 2008, rumors about the connection between it and the school persisted until Cohan, along with two colleagues, took over the Playhouse's management.
