An esteemed member of Max Reinhardt's theater in Berlin, Wegener lent his massive bulk to an array of stage classics before making his screen debut playing dual roles in "The Student of Prague" (1913). In 1914, he co-wrote and starred in "The Golem," the first of his three adaptations of the mystical Jewish tale.
