Biography
After having worked in the industry for more than 35 years, veteran character actress Carol Ann Susi became best known as one of television's great off-camera characters as the booming voice of meek astrophysicist Howard Wolowitz's overbearing Jewish mother on "The Big Bang Theory" (CBS 2007-). As a yeller-for-hire, Susi even had to attend regular voice therapy sessions at Cedars-Sinai's Outpatient Voice Program to save her vocal instrument. Although her never-fully-seen character on the series was described as a morbidly obese layabout, the pretty, engaging Susi was far removed from her most famous character. Carol Ann Susi died of cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 62 on September 11, 2014.
Carol Ann Susi was born on February 2, 1952 in New York and scored her first prime-time gig at the age of 22 as accident-prone intern Monique Marmelstein on the supernatural cult favorite "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" (ABC 1974-75). Susi then guest-starred on countless dramas and sitcoms over the years. Her bombastic New York accent served her career well, from playing Peg Bundy's loudmouth friend on "Married With Children" (FOX 1987-1997) to George Costanza's date from hell on a memorable episode of "Seinfeld" (NBC 1989-1998). With a knack for playing memorable characters, Susi managed to leave an impression doing one-off guest appearances on shows ranging from hit dramas "NYPD Blue" (ABC 1993-2005), "ER" (NBC 1994 - 2009) and "Six Feet Under" (HBO 2001-2005) to classic sitcoms "Murphy Brown" (CBS 1988-1998), "Cheers" (NBC 1982-1993) and "The Drew Carey Show" (ABC 1995-2004).
While television continued to be her bread and butter, Susi also put a number of film credits under her belt, appearing in small roles in the Nora Ephron-penned mob comedy "My Blue Heaven" (1990), Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn's dark comedy "Death Becomes Her" (1992) and as Adam Sandler's mom in the romantic comedy "Just Go With It" (2011). Carol Ann Susi died on November 11, 2014, following an extended battle with cancer. She was 62.
