Life Events

1899

Began theatrical career as an actor with a Swedish-speaking theater in Turku, Finland at age 16

1904

Technically a Russian citizen, fled to Sweden from Finland in order to avoid being drafted into Russian army

1904

Acted in small roles in Swedish theater

1907

Returned to Finland to join Swedish Theatre in Helsinki

1911

Became artistic manager of the Lilla Teatern, a small theater in Stockholm where he made his debut as a stage director

1912

Joined Svenska Biograf (later Svensk Filmindustri) studios; directed, wrote and acted in first feature film, "Mor och dotter/Mother and Daughter"

1916

Served as first artistic director of avant-garde Lorensberg Theatre in Gothenburg

1921

Became a Swedish citizen in July 1921

1925

Arrived in USA (July)

1927

US film debut, "Hotel Imperial"

1927

Returned to Sweden (December)

Presented show, "Broadway", at Oscar Theater in Stockhom
