Biography

Certain film actors are lucky enough to be a part of scene so iconic that it lives on in infamy. Such is the case with the unsavory sequence in "The Godfather" in which actor John Marley's character, a movie mogul, crosses the wrong guys and wakes up the following morning with the severed head of his prize-winning horse beside him in bed. The scene capped a nice little run for Marley, who starred in the 1968 John Cassavetes film "Faces" and was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as the father of Ali MacGraw's character in the iconic 1970 drama "Love Story." As a hard-working character actor, Marley amassed over 150 credits during his career. On the television side, he was best known for his role as D.W. Banner, father of mutating lead David Banner in the 1978-82 series "The Incredible Hulk," though his work stretched all the way back to the earliest days of live TV in 1950 with "The Philco Goodyear Television Playhouse." Another memorable film role came in 1978, as the movie producer working with Burt Reynolds' stuntman character in the action drama "Hooper."
