An award-winning set designer who frequently worked with David Mamet, Merritt designed the original set for Mamet's play "American Buffalo" and served as production designer on the writer-director's three films: "House of Games" (1987), "Things Change" (1988) and "Homicide" (1991). Merritt also designed the sets for Arthur Hiller's Babe Ruth biopic, "The Babe" (1992), which was released in the same year that he died of cancer.
