Biography
Acclaimed Japanese actress Shinobu Otake has led a long and prolific career, appearing in many films and also lending her voice to high-profile animated movies. During the mid-1970s, Otake appeared in her first role as a teen character in the domestic drama "The Gate of Youth," and she reprised the role in its sequel, "The Gate of Youth Part 2." The latter production marked the beginning of accolades for the talented actress, with her performance garnering a Japanese Academy Award nomination. In 1979, Otake won at the prestigious ceremony, scoring both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for the dramas "The Incident" and "Seishoku no ishibumi," respectively. The same year, she was featured in "Oh! The Nomugi Pass," a period piece about women working in the silk trade in the early 20th century, and she went on to do voice-over work on the animated movie "Twelve Months," a family-friendly fantasy. Following her appearance in the war drama "Children of Nagasaki," Otake went on to a supporting role in "Mahjong Horoki," a crime film starring Hiroyuki Sanada, and the romance "Beyond the Shining Sea," both of which landed her more prize nominations. Though not as busy during the 1990s, she closed out the decade with yet another Japanese Academy Award win, this time for Best Actress in the wintery drama "Railroad Man." Remaining active with various projects, Otake notably voiced a key character in the lush animated film "The Secret of Arrietty," a production by the revered company Studio Ghibli.
