Worked as a textbook editor in Syracuse, NY following divorce from Harold Morrison

Worked as editor at NYC headquarters of Random House

Made publishing debut with The Bluest Eye, written while teaching at Howard University

1973

Received National Book Award nomination for second novel Sula

1977

Wrote breakthrough novel Song of Solomon; won National Books Critics Circle Award

1987

Won Pulitzer Prize for fiction and American Book Award for critically successful Beloved

1993

Became first African-American woman to receive Nobel Prize in Literature

1996

Song of Solomon became second novel selected in Oprah Winfrey's popular Book Club

1998

Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover starred in feature adaptation "Beloved"

1999

Co-wrote children's book The Big Box with son Slade Morrison
