Biography

Born in Lushoto, Tanzania, and raised in Toronto, Rachel Luttrell is best known for her roles on such TV series as "Street Legal" and "Stargate Atlantis." A classically trained singer, ballet dancer, and pianist, Luttrell developed an early interest in drama and theater. As a teenager she appeared in many stage productions in Toronto before moving to Los Angeles. Luttrell made her television debut in 1986 with a role in the drug abuse TV movie "Courage," and in 1989 she landed a recurring role in the Canadian series "Street Legal." Luttrell left the show in 1993 and soon found work in such films as "House," an adaptation of a one-man play about isolation, and "Joe's So Mean to Josephine," which chronicled the twisted relationship of two dysfunctional people. During the early 2000s Luttrell guest-starred on such shows as "ER" and "Charmed" before being cast as warrior leader Teyla Emmagan in the 2004-2009 sci-fi series "Stargate Atlantis." She has since portrayed a wealthy and insecure British woman in the indie film "The Aviary," and appeared in a supporting role in the madcap comedy "A Dog's Breakfast."
