Prolific voice-over artist George Lowe provided the voice of Space Ghost, the proudly addled host of "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" (Cartoon Network 1994-2004), which imagined the 1960s cartoon hero as the host of a surreal talk show broadcasting from outer space. A veteran announcer for radio and television since the 1970s, Lowe's straight-faced delivery as Space Ghost made him a star of sorts among the show's devoted followers, and led to numerous other voice-over opportunities for cartoon series. When the show ran its course in 2004, Lowe moved into voice-over work for national television commercials and radio, but also continued to share his offbeat talents with animation audiences on shows like "The Fairly Oddparents" (Nickelodeon 1998- ), which did much to preserve his status as one of the most popular voice-over artists in that medium.
Born George Edward Lowe on November 10, 1957 in Dunedin, Florida, George Lowe became interested in broadcasting at an early age, and landed his first professional job at the age of 15 at WWJB in Brooksville, Florida. After graduating from Hernando High School, Lowe attended the Radio Engineering Institute of Sarasota and Pasco-Hernando Community College. Work on local radio and television stations preceded national jobs as an announcer for TBS and Cartoon Network. In 1994, he was tapped to voice Space Ghost for "Space Ghost Coast to Coast," a spoof of vapid talk shows featuring the venerable Hanna-Barbera cartoon hero as the host of a surreal chat program that interspersed animated footage with disjointed interviews with real celebrities. Lowe's robust, stentorian voice for Space Ghost did much to sell the absurd nature of the show's premise, and helped to make it one of Cartoon Network's most popular programs. In addition to voicing the lead role and several additional characters, Lowe also served as writer and co-producer for the series.
In addition to voicing Space Ghost for "Coast to Coast," Lowe performed the character on a wide array of other animated series, including "Cartoon Planet" (Cartoon Network 1995-98 ), a spinoff of "Coast to Coast" that featured the character as the host of a bizarre variety series. He also played Space Ghost on the popular "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" (Adult Swim 2001- ) and its feature release, "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters" (2007). Lowe also appeared regularly on other Adult Swim shows, including the '50s sitcom parody "The Brak Show" (2001-03), the anime parody "Perfect Hair Forever" (2004-07) and "Robot Chicken" (Adult Swim 2005- ). After the original "Coast to Coast" ended its run in 2004, Lowe became an in-demand announcer and voice-over artist for numerous television ad campaigns, including spots for Fox Television and Capital One, as well as bumpers for radio stations across the country.
