Biography

Although her career began in modeling and dancing, as a teen, Sophie Lowe quickly realized that acting was her true love. After appearing in a series of shorts, she landed a starring role in her first feature film, "Beautiful Kate" (2009). Small parts in film and TV followed, including a recurring part in the Australian series "The Slap" (ABC1, 2011), as well as a role alongside Naomi Watts and Robin Wright in "Adore" (2013). In 2013, Lowe was cast as Alice in the American television series "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" (ABC, 2013-14).

Lowe was born in Sheffield, England, but when she was ten, she moved to Australia with her parents and brother Sam. Lowe cycled through modeling and dancing before being cast as the titular character in the Rachel Ward-directed independent film "Beautiful Kate" while still a teenager. Lowe set off to the United States with Hollywood ambitions but found the town less than welcoming: "My first time to L.A., I was 18. I was by myself, probably a bad idea, because I didn't know anyone. It was all scary," she told the Vancouver Sun in October of 2013.

Hollywood may have been hesitant to welcome her, but back home in Australia she worked regularly, appearing in TV and movies including all eight episodes of the Australian series "The Slap," as well as the thriller "Blame" (2010). A growing interest in directing led her to write, direct and appear in a video clip about the Sydney band Go Roll Your Bones. She also went on to co-write, direct and star in a seven-minute short, "A Man Walks into a Bar" (2013). In 2013 Lowe worked with Naomi Watts and Robin Wright in the Australian-French drama "Adore," based on a novel by Doris Lessing. Her Hollywood persistence finally paid off when she won the lead role of Alice on the ABC series "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland," a spin-off of the popular fairy-tale inspired "Once Upon a Time" (ABC, 2011-).
