Biography

Gordon Lonsdale is a director of photography working in television. He began his career in the late 1970s, working as a grip on obscure films and film shorts, gradually making his way into assistant camera gigs into the early- and mid-1980s. By the late 1980s, Lonsdale had become a cinematographer for television, and by 1992 he landed his first recurring cinematography gig, photographing more than half the episodes of the Joshua Brand-created drama "Going To Extremes," which lasted just a season. Lonsdale's relationship with Brand would pay off big in 1993, when Brand and co-creator John Falsey brought him on to work on much of the second half of the critically-acclaimed, hit comedic drama "Northern Exposure." Lonsdale provided his eye for 47 episodes of the show about life in small-town Cicely, Alaska, through the show's final season in 1995. From that job, Lonsdale immediately transitioned over to the genre of sci-fi, filming 14 episodes of the drama "Space: Above and Beyond." In 1998, Lonsdale was director of photography for the not particularly successful TV revival of the 1960 classic Western "The Magnificent Seven," and then in 2000 he was the d.p. for several episodes of the drama "Providence." After several lower-profile gigs through the first half of the 2000s, in 2006 Lonsdale landed his next big gig, as the primary D.P. for the successful Fox crime-mystery "Bones," on which he also directed two episodes, in 2008 and 2009.
