Biography

French-Canadian director Jean-Sébastien Lord was best known for writing and directing "L'ange gardien" (2014), a drama about an aging night-time security guard who develops a relationship with a woman who robs the building he's watching. Prior to directing "L'ange gardien," Lord worked as an assistant director for many years on several high-profile Canadian films, most notably the romantic drama "A Walk on the Moon" (1999) as well as the made-for-TV-movie "Mary Cassatt: An American Impressionist" (1999). With "L'ange gardien," however, Lord had proven his days as a below-the-line hired hand were over. Lord followed a rather unlikely pathway to feature film directing. One of his first ever jobs on a film set was working as a stand-in on the forgettable horror-comedy "Brainscan" (1994). Over the next several years he worked a variety of assistant director jobs on several films, including the erotic action thriller "Dead End" (1998) and the Richard Attenborough-directed western drama "Grey Owl" (1999). Lord directed his first feature, a French-Canadian comedy called "Heaven," in 1999. It would be another 15 years before his self-written follow-up feature, "L'ange gardien," hit Canadian theaters in March 2014.
