Worked for Perry Ellis with fellow designer Marc Jacobs

1990

Hired by Gucci to be the brand's chief women's ready-to-wear designer

1992

Took over as head designer for Gucci's ready-to-wear, fragrances, image, advertising, and store design

1994

Promoted to creative director of Gucci; later Gucci acquired the house of Yves Saint-Laurent and Ford was named the creative director of that label as well

2004

Parted ways with the Gucci group over creative differences

2004

Opened the Tom Ford fashion house, which began with accessories; his line of eye wear was the first to become successful

2007

Opened first Tom Ford flagship store on New York City's Madison Avenue

2009

Made directorial debut with "A Single Man," based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood; also adapted screenplay; earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay
