Inspired by the Maysles brothers' 1968 documentary "Salesman," South African-born Daniel J Harris fashioned the satirical "The Bible and Gun Club" (1996). The black-and-white film followed the exploits of a group of middle-aged salesmen (played by real-life non-acting salesmen) attending a convention in Las Vegas and premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival. In 1997, it was screen at Locarno where it earned a special jury prize. Harris, who graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Arts at the University of Capetown, emigrated to L.A. where he worked in animation before making his acclaimed feature debut.
