This pioneer of Australian cinema was both a producer and a director in a career that ran from the silents to the films of the 196Os. Hall made the newsreel a mainstay of Australian culture through his commitment to developing and producing them at Cinesound on a weekly basis. Over the course of his life, Hall directed 18 feature films in addition to many docs. His directorial debut was the Aussie box office smash "On Our Selection" (1930). Another standout was "Mr. Chedworth Steps Out" (1938).
Hall was publicity director of First National Pictures Australia from 1922-29, soon after becoming general manager of the production company Cinesound. During his tenure, he became known for fostering new talent such as the actors Cecil Kellaway and Peter Finch. In 1956, he was hired to maintain mogul Sir Frank Packer's TV interests, Television Corporation, where he remained until retirement in 1966.
