Synopsis
Dr. Judith Randall is a dedicated and brilliant surgeon, much too dedicated to suit her husband, airplane designer Allan Graeme. Over the course of their marriage, Allan has become more intolerant of his wife's absences, and their daughter Elsa often resorts to tantrums to get attention from her mother. On the night of Judith and Allan's wedding anniversary, Allan has planned a special evening together, but Judith is called away on an emergency. Bitter over being left alone again, Allan goes to a party given by Gail Patterson, an attractive family friend who is in love with him. Gail plays on Allan's unhappiness, and as time passes she wins Allan and Elsa's affection. One day, Gail takes Elsa to the zoo, where Elsa's beloved dog Moxie is run over. Elsa takes Moxie to Judith's hospital, but Judith gently explains that she is a people doctor and Moxie must be taken to a veterinarian. Moxie dies at the animal hospital, and Elsa holds her mother responsible. Soon after, at a surprise birthday party Judith throws for Allan, she is jealous to see his and Gail's intimacy. Judith walks in on them as they are declaring their love for one another, and after the party ends, Allan tells Judith that their marriage is a farce because of her inattention, no matter how good her reasons may be. Judith agrees to let Allan have a divorce but insists that Elsa remain with her. Judith then tries to resign from the hospital so that she can devote herself to Elsa, but kindly Dr. Mathews persuades her to remain until he can find a replacement. Later, Judith has been served with divorce papers, and she struggles to be a good mother to bratty Elsa, who wishes to live with her father and Gail. Allan and Gail take Elsa to a fair, and Allan misinterprets Elsa's tall tales of Judith's discipline as neglect and cruelty. Despite Judith's protests that Elsa will become spoiled, Allan takes her to live with him and Gail on Long Island. Gail is distraught at having Elsa thrust upon her, as she had acted nice to her earlier in order to win Allan, and she admonishes Elsa to be nicer to Judith. One day, Judith comes to visit and watches in horror as Elsa tumbles from a horse too spirited for her to handle. The child is seriously injured and is rushed to Judith's hospital in Allan's plane. The airport is fogged in, however, and as Allan circles the plane, Judith is forced to operate. The operation is successful and Judith saves her daughter's life. Soon after, Elsa convalesces in the hospital, and Allan proudly tells Judith's other young patients that he is Dr. Randall's husband. With her family reunited and supporting her, Judith withdraws her resignation from the hospital.
