Synopsis
Eastern cattle buyer Barrett arrives in the Southwest in order to steal the Lopez Diamond, which has been in the Lopez family for generations, before SeƱor Lopez can restore the diamond to the Mexican people. At a party at his hacienda, attended by United States marshals Eddie Dean and Soapy, Lopez exposes a bag of gold that is his life savings. The next day, one of Lopez' ranch hands is killed in an ambush as he takes the gold to town. Eddie and Soapy find his body and report the incident to Barrett, hoping to intimidate him. At the hacienda, while Dean and Soapy visit Lopez and Maria, his beautiful young friend, Barrett makes Lopez an offer to buy the diamond, and Lopez takes it out of the safe to show it to him. Soapy, standing guard outside, is hit by a water pump and dreams he finds the gold in a buffalo head in the town saloon. Later, Eddie catches Barrett's men at the hacienda, but they escape. Maria appears genuinely loyal to Lopez and befriends Eddie, but later she asks Barrett to help her steal the diamond. He refuses in order not to expose his true motives, then tries to kidnap her and steal the key to the safe, but she is rescued by Eddie. Barrett forces Juan, a Lopez ranch hand, to frame Eddie for the murder of the ambushed ranch hand by showing Lopez his gold bag and a few coins found among Eddie's possessions. Barrett's men then shoot Juan dead, and Eddie and Soapy find him. Later Eddie catches Maria opening the safe, and Lopez hits Eddie in order to defend Maria, who pulls a gun on Soapy. The bandits then enter, however, and Eddie comes to Lopez and Maria's rescue. After the bandits confess they are working for Barrett, and Eddie admits that he and Soapy are marshals, Maria reveals herself to be a government agent on assignment to protect the diamond. Eddie and Soapy go after Barrett, and during a gunfight at the saloon, Soapy shoots the buffalo head, which falls, spilling out the gold. Eddie finds the Lopez diamond on Barrett and arrests him. Lopez and Maria ride west with Eddie and Soapy as their chaperones.
