Synopsis

Vaquero, a frontier village which grew when an irrigation company sold land to new settlers for five dollars an acre, is being victimized by Forsyth, a crooked representative of the water company who bought up the land and plans to resell grants at twenty-five dollars an acre. This angers the settlers and prompts Tom Garfield, his younger brother Frank, Bill Burnside and his daughter Judith to demand their deeds at the original cost. But Forsyth overrides their protests and tells the sheriff to evict Burnside. However, when the sheriff shows more interest in investigating the deeds than in evicting the settlers, Forsyth sends for Chris Matson, the fastest gun in the territory, to do his dirty work. When Tom encounters Matson at Burnside's ranch, he warns him to leave the country but Matson ignores him. Instead, Matson shoots the sheriff, assumes his office and arrests Frank for the murder. Matson then summons a group of buyers to Vaquero, but Tom and the Sons of the Pioneers drive them out of town. Angered, Matson and Forsyth ride after the singing quintet, and Tom seizes the opportunity to rifle Forsyth's office, where he discovers incriminating documents. Tom then assembles the ranchers in Mesquite Canyon while Frank breaks out of jail and rides to the land office with the papers. Matson and his men surround the ranchers' hideout and in the midst of the ensuing battle, Frank rides to the rescue with the U.S. Cavalry. Forsyth flees when he realizes that his cause is lost, but Matson shoots him down just as he is about to escape with his ill-gotten gains. Tom then forces Matson to go for his gun and beats him to the draw.
