Synopsis
Robert Marshall, a clerk for the World News , is promoted by the city editor on the suggestion of Collins, a reporter who continually borrows money from Bob. His first assignment is to accompany society editor Myra Deane to the International Ball. Bob writes a glowing report about her, and both of their articles are published on the first page. Bob takes Myra out for a picnic, but when a storm breaks, they take refuge in her luxurious apartment. Bob falls in love with Myra and, with his savings, buys her a bracelet for her birthday and brings it to her apartment on an evening when she has canceled their plans. Myra is uncomfortable with his presence, and when their publisher, William Winter, who pays for Myra's apartment, arrives Bob tells him he wants to marry Myra. Winter insists Bob leave the apartment, but Bob is horrified that Myra is living off a married man and fights with Winter. Winter falls and is killed when his head hits the edge of a table. Myra tells Bob that Winter is only unconscious and sends him home, then calls Winter's assistant, Cyril Herk. To avoid scandal, they arrange for Winter's body to be found in his office, an apparent victim of an unknown assailant. When Bob reads the headlines about Winter's death in the morning edition, he immediately turns himself in as the murderer, but refuses to reveal the circumstances of the crime. Bob is convicted and sentenced to hang, and at the last minute, when Myra realizes that the newspaper cannot get him a reprieve, she confesses that Bob hit Winter in self-defense, and Bob is freed. He returns home to his beloved mother, and is celebrating his birthday when Collins appears with a package from Myra. Inside is the bracelet he gave her, and a card telling him that if he still wants her, he will have to give the bracelet back to her. He immediately leaves to reunite with Myra.
