Synopsis
After cowhand Dusty Smith stops a man from cheating rancher Jim Simpson in a card game, Simpson offers him a job supervising his ranch hands. Simpson explains that he is ill and needs someone to look after the ranch and his hot-headed son Bill while he is in San Francisco for treatment. Dusty turns him down, but after he sees Bill run from the local saloon after shooting a man named Duke, he decides to keep an eye on the young man. Bill rides directly to Sheriff Rigby's house and there tells his side of the story to his fiancée Cindy, the sheriff's daughter. When the sheriff arrives, Bill insists that he shot Duke in self-defense. Because Duke was not badly hurt, the sheriff does not arrest Bill, but warns him that the next time he gets into trouble, he will go to jail. Cindy then quarrels with Bill over his temper and breaks their engagement. In town, Dusty intervenes on behalf of Santa Fe Jones, who is accused of horse theft when he returns a stolen horse, and learns that rustlers have been harassing the local ranchers. After Blackie Evans, the owner of the saloon, warns Dusty that strangers are not welcome in town, Santa Fe suggests that Dusty team up with him. The two men ride to the Simpson ranch and, without revealing his connection to Simpson, Dusty gets jobs for himself and Santa Fe. Dusty has a serious talk with Bill about his temper, and later, when Cindy announces that the rustlers have killed some men, Bill apologizes to her. While the cowboys track the rustlers, Dusty sneaks behind them and shoots one of the rustlers. Duke, the other man, escapes and reports to Blackie, who unknown to the townspeople, is the head of the gang. Later, Duke claims that he and the other man were just riding by and insists that the sheriff arrest Dusty and Santa Fe for his partner's murder. With Bill's help, Dusty and Santa Fe escape from jail and rejoin the other ranchers, and they all watch secretly when the deputy sheriff reports the escape to Blackie. Blackie and his gang then leave for their hideout, and the ranchers follow. A shootout ensues. Finally, the rustlers are rounded up. Simpson returns home cured and watches while Bill and Cindy are married.
