Synopsis
At a theater on Broadway, chorus girl and redhead Cathy Abbott, tells her blonde roommates, Patti Calhoun and Vicki Adams, that her parents, who believe she is attending an exclusive girls' school called Oakhaven, are expecting her home for vacation. After showing Patti and Vicki a photo of the man her parents want her to marry, millionaire manufacturer Freddie Ainsley, Cathy persuades them to pose as her sorority sisters and accompany her to her family's home in Cliftwood. Meanwhile, in Cliftwood, Freddie tells Judge Abbott that Miss Courtley, his late father's housekeeper and companion, is claiming that Freddie's father promised to provide for her after his death. In New York, meanwhile, playboy Dick Lawler invites the girls to his hotel room for a party, then frightens away millionaire rival Tom Randell, by telling him that he has invited three "country cousins." The girls arrive just as Tom is rushing out, and when he sees them, he changes his mind, but Dick will not let him in. After he impersonates a waiter to gain admittance, Tom learns of the girls's plan to leave for Cliftwood in the morning. The next day, Tom arrives at their apartment disguised as "James," a limousine driver supposedly hired by Dick to drive them to Cliftwood. Along the way, Cathy recognizes Tom from the previous night. When they arrive, Tom tells Mrs. Abbott that his employer, Vicki's father, has instructed him to stay there so that he can drive them back to school. Mrs. Abbott happily accommodates Tom, after which the girls take Cathy's car into town. There, Cathy meets her friends, Miles Bradbury and Melvin Lounsdale, and invites them to her reception at Cliftwood. Later, Cathy decides to accept Freddie's marriage proposal, and Mrs. Abbott plans an engagement party for later in the week. When Miss Courtley arrives at the Abbotts, Patti and Vicki unwittingly inform her that they and Cathy are chorus girls, then invite her to the engagement party. That evening, the girls go on a triple date with Freddie, Melvin and Miles, and are followed by Tom to the nightclub. On Tom's suggestion, Cathy is persuaded to sing for the crowd, and a disgusted Freddie storms out. When Tom arranges for Tony Pastor and his orchestra to play at the engagement party, the girls, who know Tony from New York, fear that their true identities will be exposed. Later, Miss Courtley approaches Melvin and Miles with the news of the girls's profession and a threat of blackmail. After they pay her, Melvin and Miles assume that Patti and Vicki are "loose" and take them down to the lake. The girls, however, do not reciprocate their advances, and instead, push Melvin and Miles into the lake and walk back to the party together. There, Freddie apologizes to Cathy, but she angrily returns his ring. When Miss Courtley threatens to expose the girls unless Abbott pays her $50,000, the police arrive and arrest her for a previous crime. Later, the judge tells Cathy that he is not ashamed of her profession, then grants her permission to marry whomever she wants. Cathy, Vicki and Patti sing and dance for the scandalized guests, after which Cathy announces her surprise engagement to Tom.
