Synopsis

Jeff Gordon and his friend, Hungry Huggins, are resting on their journey to Twin Forks to visit Jeff's brother Wyatt when Hungry's horse wanders into the nearby cemetery. While searching for his horse, Hungry stumbles into a freshly dug grave, and he and Jeff are shocked to see a placard indicating that Wyatt is to be buried there. They go to undertaker Horace Glumm's funeral parlor, where Wyatt's widow Alice tells them that Wyatt was murdered by rival rancher Bart Jackson, with whom he had a long-standing feud. Horace adds that Bart has been arrested for the murder, but Sheriff Morgan is seeking more evidence before bringing him to trial. Eager to see Bart hanged, Jeff visits Morgan, who tells him that the only evidence against Bart is a threatening letter found in Wyatt's pocket. Jeff confronts Bart in his jail cell, but Bart's daughter Dorothy angrily orders him to leave. Later, after Wyatt's funeral, Jeff, Hungry and Alice notice some men driving a herd of Wyatt's cattle off his ranch. Jeff and Hungry ride out to investigate and are told that bank president Foster Felton has foreclosed on Wyatt's heavily mortgaged ranch. When Alice denies any knowledge of a mortgage, Jeff calls on Felton, who shows him a loan application bearing Wyatt's signature. After Jeff produces a draft from Wyatt's Cheyenne bank, however, Felton agrees to grant an extension on the mortgage. Later, the stage bringing the money from the Cheyenne bank is attacked by bandits, who kill the guard and steal the strong box. Jeff and Hungry arrive, and three of the bandits are killed in the ensuing shootout. When the fourth bandit, Bully, escapes with the money, Jeff begins to question whether Bart is really guilty of Wyatt's murder. Jeff goes to the jail and offers to help Bart prove his innocence, and Bart suggests that he work with Dorothy. Felton overhears their conversation and goes to see Horace, who reports happily that in addition to Wyatt's money, the stagecoach robbery netted him four more bodies to bury. After Felton expresses fears that Jeff will soon figure out their scheme, Horace orders Bully to kill Jeff. The next day, Jeff goes to the Jackson ranch and tells Dorothy he believes her father was framed. Bully barges in, but Jeff defeats him in a fistfight. Later, Felton tells Horace he wants to quit, but Horace threatens to reveal that the respected banker once served time for forgery. He then orders Felton to sign Bart's name on a confession and forge a mortgage on his ranch. That night, while Bully's men distract the sheriff, Bully takes Bart from his cell, knocks him unconscious and brings him to Horace's funeral parlor. When Jeff, Hungry and Dorothy find the forged confession in Bart's empty cell, they go to the bank, where Jeff forces Felton to admit that Horace has been blackmailing him into committing the forgeries. At the funeral parlor, Horace is preparing to kill Bart by enbalming him when Jeff and Hungry burst in. Horace escapes in his cart, with Jeff in pursuit, but loses control and plunges over the side of a mountain. Later, as the Jacksons and Gordons gather for a party at Alice's ranch, Jeff takes Dorothy aside and gives her an engagement ring.
