Synopsis
Rose, the tempestuous French Canadian ward of Hector McCollins of the Hudson's Bay Co., is courted by Devlin, a Mountie, and Joe, an Irishman, among others. But she falls in love with Bruce, a young railroad engineer, while Dr. Cusick, an erratic physician, keeps a fanatically protective eye on her and resents the intrusion of the railroad. Rose keeps a secret engagement with her lover, and Cusick, spying, learns of their plan to elope, intercepts Bruce, and tries to kill him. In the ensuing struggle, the maddened doctor is killed. After many escapes from the posse, Bruce and Rose start down the river in a canoe but discover that Devlin, hidden under a blanket, is accompanying them. Devlin, however, convinced of their love, returns to the settlement with the news that they have "gone over the rapids."
