Synopsis
While riding in a boxcar, Bob Radford and friendly hobo Rusty are thrown off the freight train by other hoboes. Bob then tells Rusty that he has an important job to do now that he is back in the West. Just as Rusty offers to help him, a stranger rides up and starts shooting. Meanwhile, the sheriff is laying in wait for men who are supposed to come for a stolen wagon, and when he sees Bob and Rusty, he chases them, thinking that they are the thieves. After outlaw Reno helps Bob and Rusty elude the sheriff, he takes them to his hideout where Bob learns that Reno's gang wants to take over the Circle R ranch and have successfully scared off everyone but Andrews, the foreman. After Bob recognizes a gun with the initials "JR" at the hideout, he secretly tells Rusty that his uncle, whose initials were "JR," owned the Circle R Ranch but was murdered. Bob has come home incognito to find his uncle's killer and shows Rusty papers to prove his ownership ofthe ranch. Rusty agrees to Bob's plan to pose as Bob and produce the ownership documents while Bob secretly investigates his uncle's murder. Andrews and his daughter Betty accept Rusty as Bob, but neighboring rancher Curt Harris, who wants to marry Betty, is suspicious. Reno soon arrives with the sheriff and accuses the real Bob of murdering the uncle, but Rusty and Bob then reveal that Bob is the real nephew and owner of the ranch. Bob then says that his investigation has proved that Reno is his uncle's murderer, but a panicked Reno reveals that Harris is the real murderer and had planned all along to take over the Radford ranch. Harris tries to escape, but Bob outwits him and returns him to the sheriff. He then tells Betty, Rusty and Andrews how he uncovered the evidence to incriminate Harris.
