Synopsis

As a child, Buck Saunders is shunned by his peers in King City because of his father's reputation as a rustler. He is befriended only by Muriel Fergus, whose brother Milt continually bullies Buck. When Buck's father is killed, his friend, Ford Cruze, sends Buck to be reared by a foster father. Buck does not return to King City until he is an adult, and then finds that Milt is a gambler and rustler, and the aging Ford is a cattle buyer. Buck rekindles his romance with Muriel, in spite of opposition from Muriel's father, Tom Fergus, who wants to run Buck out of town. Fergus disqualifies Buck from a rodeo competition for fighting, although Buck was framed by Milt. The rodeo is not a total loss, however, because Buck finds an ally in Jack Thorne, a member of the Cattlemen's Association. Later, Milt plants his father's cattle in Buck's corral, and although Muriel warns Buck of Milt's treachery, Buck is arrested. Thorne and Buck arrange to frame the rustlers and make it look as if Buck broke out of jail. To help them, Ford plays poker with Milt and demands his winnings by the next day. To get the money, Milt tries to break into his father's house and is seen by Muriel. Unsuccessful, Milt plans to rustle his father's herd and give the cattle to Ford as payment. During the theft, Milt's partner, Spike Travis, is shot. Muriel shoots Buck out of loyalty to her brother, who refuses to confess after Buck captures him. Later, after Milt has escaped, Muriel visits Buck, who forgives her while recuperating from his wound. Out of kindness, Ford lies to Milt's father and tells him Milt was not involved with the rustling. While Milt moves away to try to forge a new, honest life for himself, Buck vows to keep Milt's secret.

Notes

Writer Frances Guihan authored screenplays for ten out of the seventeen Universal Buck Jones westerns. A plot synopsis in the pressbook indicates that "Buck" and "Muriel" marry at the end of the film, and that some scenes were shot on location in the San Fernando Valley and at Vasquez Rocks in the Angeles National Forest.
