Synopsis

In a small country town, newspaper editor Steve Lewis and Mary Lou Carroll, his one-woman staff, struggle to keep their paper, the Bee Clarion , afloat. Mary Lou, in addition to her job as reporter and ad saleswoman, cooks meals at the office for Steve and his friends, Howard Adams, an attorney fresh out of law school, and Dr. Peter Sparks, a struggling young physician. Yearning for a headline, Steve and his friends drive to the outskirts of town to investigate the death of farmer Tad Herkimer. Seizing upon the death as an opportunity to inject some excitement into the Bee , Steve and his friends fake some clues and convince the sheriff that the farmer has been murdered. After the coroner exposes the hoax, however, Steve, humiliated, is about to leave town when he receives a visit from Marty Collins, the town pool hustler, claiming that Herkimer was killed by his own daughter Molly. Molly signs a confession, but during the trial, Marty gets drunk and admits that the confession was a fake. Molly, however, is flattered by her notoriety, and refuses to recant her confession. The jury is about to return a verdict of guilty when Mary Lou uncovers some clues that point to the real killers. Marty suddenly leaves town, and Steve, acting on a secret tip, traces him to his hideout and brings him back to court as a witness. Using information supplied by Marty and evidence supplied by Mary Lou, Molly's attorney, Howard Adams, proves that Herkimer's barn was being used by silk smugglers who killed the farmer in a quarrel over money. The sensational murder trial brings new accounts pouring into the newspaper office, and Steve and Mary Lou, at a loss to find a headline after the trial, decide to elope.
