Synopsis

Seaman Bob Roberts, a radio operator, is determined that his brother Jim will not have a life at sea and, to this end, sends him to school. After Captain Cogswell irresponsibly lets Bob's friend, Jack Stacey, die after his ship hits an iceberg, Bob takes a furlough to visit his family. To his dismay, he learns that Jim has dropped out of school and taken a job with the same steamship company and has met a nurse, Peggy Phillips, with whom he has fallen in love. Jim invites Bob to meet Peggy. Bob and Peggy arrive before Jim, and not knowing who she is, Bob tries to pick her up. At first Peggy is outraged, but when she is told Bob's name, she plays along as a joke. After Jim arrives and introduces Peggy, Bob believes that Peggy is not faithful to his brother and storms out of the restaurant. Bob decides to accept his company's offer of a desk job, but after his former ship explodes during an accidental fire, he goes on a drunken binge. Learning that Jim and Peggy are to be married on board ship, he substitutes for another seaman in order to prevent it. The new ship is captained by Cogswell. Jim is suffering from abdominal pains, but when Peggy insists that he leave the ship, Bob ridicules him, and he stays despite Peggy's worries. During a storm, Jim collapses with appendicitis. Cogswell refuses to turn back, so Peggy must perform the operation, guided by radio instructions from a doctor on shore. Jim survives and Bob, having changed his opinion of Peggy, favors his brother's marriage.
